14-March. Hooray!!! The results were announced few days ago. Thank God that I still pass the exam. Technically speaking, I’m a 4th year medical student. Haha. But then, I heard that 80++ colleagues fail at least one subject (i.e. one-third students in year three need to repeat posting). I hereby wishes everyone all the best!!!
“Bird nest soups” have been well-known for its medicinal quality for generations in Chinese culture. It actually originates from bird nest of some species of swiftlets, specifically Aerodramus fuciphagus. This is a small bird of swift family that makes nest by using its own saliva instead of twigs, grass and leaves. The saliva will solidify after exposed to air.
People living near the caves started to harvest these bird nests as it promises a high income. However, it was sometime hard and dangerous to climb up the complicated structures in the caves to get these bird nests.
Recently, I got a chance to visit my dad’s friends’ “man-made caves”. It actually looks like a Power Ranger’s Headquarter( I could be vry excited if i'm a small kid). But, I think it worth more than that. Inside, they put on music to attract the swiftlets. Besides, they also install some sort of water spray to maintain the humidity of the internal environment. We were not allowed to enter the HQ as we might frighten the swiftlets sleeping soundly in there. However, the best part is we were given the chance to pick and choose and bring back the bird nest at a very low price.haha…

Power Ranger Head Quarter^^.
5 pieces of plactic looking thingy cost us Rm 100 (Market price: RM 250)
According to the owner, they sell 1kg bird nest at the price of RM5,000. And, on average, they produce more than 8kg per month. WOW!!!
Maybe one day instead of taking care of patients, I can change to take care of birds!!!hehe..
Man-made one not so ori la..like pirated.. :P
ReplyDeleteI'm nt sure bout the medicinal properties, but it taste better than shark fin, that's for matters.
My preference would be the red ones, literally translated as bloody bird nest (not act blood but the food they eat)
haha, for me, it’s just like test tube baby. They are creating the environment, and making the natural process happen. I won’t say test tube baby is pirated.lol.
ReplyDeleteIf you insist, I would say sometimes it can b more ori than the "originals" in the sense that they sell it directly to you after harvesting. MEanwhile, the so-called "originals" one from the caves might be processed by using chemicals (to clean up all the feathers) which mayb harmful to your body.
For example, the bloody bird nest you preferred can be easily available by adding colorings.haha. I dunno its true anot but the owner told me that bloody bird nest is very rare. Therefore, those in the market or you ate might have been processed by colorings.haha.
Can have a look: http://space.taobao.com/69900a394920c500becf0e3189d730ce/show_blog-15391874.htm
Feeling nauseated??
muahaha... bloody bird nest is rarer, thts why its more expensive than the normal ones. U cant say its the same, cos those in the housing are usually fed and bred, unlike those in the wild (duno what shit they eat) lol! Not all sell directlt to u after harvesting, u happen to get it "fresh" cos he's ur dad's fren. Otherwise they usually go thru the same processing chemicals as well.
ReplyDeleteAt least mine didn't dissolved like some China fake bird nest after rendam in water. :P
haha, according to the owner they don't feedla.they r wild too.tat's y they make big money with low cost(play music n maintain humidity, tat's it). Oni spend quite some money to build the power ranger building lol.
ReplyDeletewell, the sonar equipment is the most expensive and requires experience. My dad's fren tot it was really easy too.
ReplyDeleteUntil someone decided to intercept the birds' path to his house with another sound equipment. In the end all bird hilang and all he had was an empty house. Lol!!!
All money seems easy, but nothing really is...:P
Koh Ging! wow is that bird nest house on the way to bintangor ?
